My Jacobs line: Adam > George > Anna
Adam Jacobs is the earliest known ancester of this line. His son,
George F. Jacobs, whom I remember as "Granddad," imparted only the scarcest information
about his ancestors. My mother remembers him telling her that the family had immigrated
from Germany, that the family name was originally Jacobson, and that the family had been
Jewish.
I have verified the first part of this: Adam was born in Darmstadt,
Germany in 1843, and both his parents were German born. The family (did Adam have siblings?) would have
arrived in America between 1843 and 1860, because the 1860 Pennsylvania census shows 16-year-old Adam
living on a farm with a family, where he worked as a saddler. (Still trying to determine if
his parents lived nearby.) The 1860 census also indicates that Adam had attended
school that year.
Adam served as a Union soldier in the Civil War. I will provide his
military history at a later time.
